Tights must be worn, under leotards and over feet, to all classes. Pink ballet slippers, leather or canvas, must be worn with elastics properly sewn. Skirts may be worn for Repertoire and Pointe classes at the teacher's discretion. No skirts are allowed in the Children’s Division. **Black leotards must be entirely black with no colors. Please avoid leotards with cut-outs, mesh, multiple straps or halters. Classic, conservative styles are encouraged. Colored leotards are allowed for Saturday Ballet IV/V class only. All dancers in the company must have a plain, black camisole leotard for demonstrations and performances. Pointe shoes should have ribbons and elastics sewn. NO safety pins. Please do not wear street shoes into the studios nor wear dance shoes outside of the building.

Our studios do get cold in the winter and close fitting warmup clothes may be worn at the beginning of class. Please do not abuse this privilege. Street clothes are not permitted as warmup attire. Leg warmers, socks and a thin ballet sweater are sufficient for a dancer to warm up in. No loose clothing allowed. Dancers should enter the studio with their class attire on. Do not use the studio as your dressing room.

Hair must be worn completely off the neck in a tight fitting bun. Neat bangs are permitted. Please do not wear colored nail polish to class. No jewelry, with the exception of small earrings, is allowed, especially watches and necklaces, which can cause injury. Do not leave any valuables in the dressing rooms. We are not responsible for lost items.

Etiquette

The Saratoga City Ballet School is committed to upholding the traditions of classical ballet. Dance is an art form that demands discipline and mutual respect. We are a pre-professional school, meaning that those attending have aspirations to a possible career in dance, either as a performer or a teacher. We expect our students to behave in a way befitting that of any serious dance student and act with decorum, both in and out of the studio. Students are to behave courteously to faculty and their peers at all times. For the benefit of others, any student causing disruptions during class will be asked to leave or sit out.

Some basic rules of the studio:

  • No food anywhere except the lobby. Only water is allowed in the studios. No sports drinks, vitamin water, etc. allowed.
  • No gum in the building.
  • No talking during instruction.
  • No hanging on the barres at any time.
  • Please take out what you bring in. This includes clothing, shoes, band-aid wrappers, tape and hairpins.
  • Mirrors are not to be touched.
  • Do not play or place any objects on the piano.
  • Do not hang your clothes on the barres. Winter coats and shoes should be left in the dressing room.
  • The faculty and accompanist should be properly thanked after each class.
  • Members of the faculty and staff as well as fellow students should be treated with respect and courtesy at all times.

We strive to cultivate a nurturing, open, and supportive environment for all who attend the Saratoga City Ballet School. Any student or parent who disturbs this harmony will be dismissed from the school.
